Poppies close up for a while when it gets dark, but with new light they open up again.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Poppies germinate especially in disturbed, nutrient-poor soil, such as on the battlefields of WWI and where new roads are being built (they are thus ''pioneer plants''). The seed can remain in the soil for decades without losing its ability to germinate. Poppies sow vigorously. They close at night and open again through light. The colour red stands for love as well as blood.
